What goes around, comes around. Politeness doesn't cost anything, and it only takes a second, but the more people say thanks, the more likely the driver is to wait next time you're running for the bus.
Thank ANYONE who is exposed to a lot of people in their job. Having worked at a coffee shop I can tell you that the least bit of negativity with customers builds up quickly, so people that give you a simple "thanks" are a Godsend...
